The Free Trade Agreement with China opens up a series of commercial opportunities for Chile with that country. In this agreement, China is taking into account broad strategic criteria, beyond the minor impact that a small economy such as Chile may have on its foreign trade and the few investments it has made in our country in the past. Among these, the agreement would be a preliminary step, with an important demonstrative effect, for a future negotiation with Mercosur. On the other hand, it is important to make the Chinese counterpart see the role that Chile can play as a real "bridge" between Asia and the rest of Latin America. Sino-North American strategic competition is an element that should not become an obstacle to strengthening ties with China.
